   Nuakhai is a festival that is mostly observed by western Odisha people. In Sambalpur it is mainly observed. Nua means new and Khai means food. so the significance of this day is to celebrate with new gains. This is the festival of farmers and harvest. They offer their grain to the local goddess(Grama Devi) and celebrate this day. All the people in that region where ever they are but they come to their home on this occasion to gather and celebrate. In the morning after offering to god they have food made by newly grain and in the evening they end with programs like folk dance, drama, etc. This day falls after Ganesh Chaturthi means the fifth day of the lunar fortnight of the month of Bhadrapada or Bhadhraba. This year Nuakhai is falling on 23rd August.
